Marine Fisheries Academy follows a competency-based maritime education and training system in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended, and the Department of Shipping (DoS), Government of Bangladesh.

The Nautical Cadet Programme consists of two years of pre-sea education and training, during which cadets acquire the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required for service as Deck Cadets on board international merchant ships.

Upon successful completion of the two-year Pre-Sea Nautical Training Programme, cadets are awarded the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC), qualifying them to join international merchant ships as Deck Cadets and commence their professional sea-going careers.

Cadets who are unable to secure onboard employment or who prefer a shore-based maritime career may alternatively undertake 12 months of internship training in reputable shipping companies, shipyards, dockyards, container terminals, port authorities, logistics organizations, and other maritime-related industries. This pathway enables cadets to acquire practical industry experience and pursue rewarding careers in the national and international maritime sector.

After successfully completing the required 12 months of approved sea service, cadets return to the Academy to complete the Fourth Year of the Bachelor's degree programme, comprising two academic semesters, including advanced coursework and a research thesis.

During the Fourth Year, cadets also prepare for and appear in the Certificate of Competency (CoC) Examination- Deck Officer Class-3 (Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch) conducted by the Department of Shipping.

Upon obtaining the Deck Officer Class-3 Certificate of Competency they are qualified to serve as Third Officers on board international merchant ships, offering excellent career prospects and competitive remuneration in the global maritime industry.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Maritime Studies (Nautical Science) programme, graduates are well qualified for a wide range of sea-going and shore-based career opportunities. In addition to pursuing careers on board international merchant ships, graduates may choose to build successful careers in the public and private sectors. They are eligible to compete in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) and other government recruitment examinations, as well as pursue employment in government organizations, autonomous bodies, banks and financial institutions, port authorities, shipping companies, shipyards, dockyards, logistics and supply chain organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and national and multinational companies. The multidisciplinary knowledge, leadership, and professional competencies acquired through the programme provide graduates with excellent career prospects in both the maritime and non-maritime sectors.
